Look out work place, here comes Gen-Y. The newest demographic to hit the workplace in force, the Gen-Y worker (born between 1981 and 1995) is now beginning to make their presence known.
Johnson Controls has just released an in-depth survey, Generation Y and the Workplace: Annual Report 2010, that provides some insight into what makes the Gen-Y worker "tick". Specific to the workplace and workspace, the survey found:

- Colors should be subtle and not too intense
- The light should be natural rather than artificial, calling for wide windows and openings
- Finishes should be soft and made out of natural and warm materials, rather than hard material
- Gen Y workers need to identify to and feel they own their workspace
- The Generation Y privileges access to their own desk rather than hot desking (hoteling)
- The Generation Y prioritises collaboration and interaction in the workplace and requires access to dedicated team spaces as well as ample breakout spaces.
