Gen Y - What You Need To Know...

Look out work place, here comes Gen-Y. The newest demographic to hit the workplace in force, the Gen-Y worker (born between 1981 and 1995) is now beginning to make their presence known.

Johnson Controls has just released an in-depth survey, Generation Y and the Workplace: Annual Report 2010, that provides some insight into what makes the Gen-Y worker "tick". Specific to the workplace and workspace, the survey found:

Workplace Specific:

  • Colors should be subtle and not too intense
  • The light should be natural rather than artificial, calling for wide windows and openings
  • Finishes should be soft and made out of natural and warm materials, rather than hard material
Workspace Specific:

  • Gen Y workers need to identify to and feel they own their workspace
  • The Generation Y privileges access to their own desk rather than hot desking (hoteling)
  • The Generation Y prioritises collaboration and interaction in the workplace and requires access to dedicated team spaces as well as ample breakout spaces.
A lot of very good information - you can download the entire survey (HERE).
